I got an interesting question from one of my clients the other day. He asked me if I would also act as an MC for his wedding as well as a DJ. This is not the first time I have been asked this but it always surprises me when I get the question. Your DJ Should MC your event.
The thing that really sets DJs apart from, let’s say bands, is that they CAN act as an MC. In fact it is just as important as the music portion of your event. Without a good MC it is very easy for the event to get bogged down with no one really knowing what to do next and when to do it. This is why I don’t understand when folks just decide to use an Ipod for the music at an event. They have spent thousands of dollars for the venue and the food but the most important person in the room is not there. Compared to everything else, we are cheap.
Every DJ has a different style, so this is why it is so important to meet with your DJ to see if it is a good fit. It is a fine line to walk, from not engaging the crowd enough, to making it all about the DJ. I’ve seen both and neither one works. My wife was at an event a few months ago (I was already booked that day) where half the people didn’t know what was going on because the DJ was too low key. On the other end I’ve seen some pretty smarmy DJs, who just love to show how cool and awesome they are.
Talk to your DJ. Let them know what you are looking for. Do you really want to party hard or are you looking for a more laid back event. A good DJ will have no problem accommodating either style.
