One way to save money on your wedding is by using barter. Say for example that you are a hair stylist and one of your clients owns a flower shop. It’s pretty easy to see how you can both win by just bartering your services. You get wedding flowers and they get their hair done for a while. You can do this for a number of services and really reduce the cost of your wedding.
This one on one barter is great but you can be quite limited in what you can trade for. Another way is to join a barter organization. In this example, you charge another member of the organization your normal rate for a haircut, color, etc. but you get paid in that organizations “trade dollars.” Those dollars then go into your account and you can use them to pay for services with any other member of the organization. In this way it is easier to access a much larger number of service providers. It works very well. I myself, am a member of a local Reno organization called Western Trade Alliance, and use it for all sorts of services.
Remember that whenever you barter, the IRS considers that income, so keep track of it, lest you get a big surprise at the end of the year.
